The Pleasures of Research

I was looking up synonyms for "hangover", having felt that my He knew he'd be feeling like a [unpleasant object] in the morning was a bit lame. These are much better (although they put me off drinking for a good twenty seconds):

aftereffect, big head, crapulence, crown fire, delirium tremens, drunkenness, feebles, head, headache, morning after, shakes, shot, willies, blue devils, blue Johnnies, delirium alcoholicum, delirium ebriositatis, dementia a potu, heebie-jeebies, horrors, jimjams, mania, muppets*, pink elephants, pink spiders, screaming meemies, shakes, snakes in the boots, the DTs.

Twenty seconds ... really ... as long as that ... ?

"He knew he'd be feeling like a pink spider in the morning", made me giggle.

Hey, I'm easily pleased.

That really is effective. I'll be here checking out that list next time I'm tempted.

My sis-in-law calls hangover paranoia 'the muppets'. Not sure why, but I thought I'd add to your list anyway.

Helen - Well, it might have been a bit less - it was however long it took me to read the list!

Karen - Yeah, I liked the PSs, too. I think I settled for: "He knew he'd be all pink spiders and screaming meemies in the morning..." Had a certain ring to it, I thought!

Oh, JJ, I wouldn't want to stop you indulging. Let me know when you're tempted, and I'll change these synonyms for ones that are more... well... tempting.

Thank you, Womagwriter, I have added 'muppets' to the list!

Fantastic! I love "the feebles" and "big head" ... that's exactly how it feels!

I just hopped over to say a huge thank you, Leigh, for the great html advice, and to leave you a big hug ... you're a star!

:o)

Crapulence is awesome. I am soooo going to use that in a sentence today :0)

Feebles is good, very good. I have often suffered a wave of the feebles of a Sunday morning. Not sure I'd have much sympathy for someone who said they had delirium ebriositatis, if you can say that then it's not a proper hangover.

Lane - I think the shakes are more about alcohol withdrawal, but I guess that makes a hangover for some...

Moondreamer - Feebles is a great word, I agree! You're welcome to the html. I hope it works!

Jen - Crapulence is my absolute favourite! I'd love to see how you use it!

Sarah - ha ha ha! Quite right! I can't even say it sober. God only knows what it means!

I love the 'feebles' and love the title of your blog (what I feel I'm doing most of the time!)

Thanks for visiting my blog

Hi. Great list. My dad always used to say he woke up feeling like Lazarus when he had one, two or six too many:)

Hey, Leigh, that must be one mighty hangover. We haven't heard from you in a while. Hope all's okay.

I hope you're all sorted for the weekend! Story clutched in hand etc!

Hello, Mid-lifer! - The 'feebles' seems to be the most popular!

Helen (S) - Like Lazarus? That's a bad hangover! What a great expression!

Maddie - Thank you, Maddie. Seriously grumpy, but perfectly well. No returned to the civilisation of WiFi from the wilds of Shropshire.

Helen (mh) - Story clutched so tightly, you'll have to prise my fingers open....! I'm trembling already.
